Knight of Pentacles, reversed

This card is from the Robin Wood deck, published in 1991.

This card is from the Robin Wood deck, published in 1991.

The Knight of Pentacles is a hard worker and dedicated to his mission. He’s well-organized and attentive to every detail of his responsibilities. He’s the least glamorous and exciting of the Knights - he might even be seen as boring - but he’s the most reliable and can always be trusted to do his duty. The fact that he’s appearing reversed in today’s reading suggests that your current approach to life could use more of his single-minded, diligent energy. Ask yourself if you can be counted on to do what people expect of you, and what you expect of yourself. Are you living up to your potential or are you wasting your time? Are you able to discipline yourself to pay attention to your tasks or are you prone to distraction and confusion? Maybe it’s time to challenge yourself to change your habits. Listen to this Knight’s advice - buckle down, focus, and get some serious work accomplished.

Five of Pentacles, reversed

This card is from the Robin Wood deck, published in 1991.

This card is from the Robin Wood deck, published in 1991.

The reversed Five of Pentacles came up last week on March 26! The fact that it’s returned again so soon is a clear indication that its message is especially important and you should pay close attention. Here is the reading from the 26th:

If you’ve been going through a period of financial difficulties that have led to you feeling downhearted and shut out of society, there’s good news - you’ll be moving out of that phase very soon. A major reason for this is that your priorities are changing. You’re gradually realizing that your focus on material wealth and career achievements isn’t enough. You’re searching for a spiritual connection in life, a deeper awareness that goes beyond mere “stuff”. This doesn’t mean that you have to give up your job and move into a monastery (though you might want to consider that option). What it does mean is that you’ll be cutting the superficial, the excess, out of your life and freeing yourself from carrying those burdens. Clear your schedule for meditation and “alone time” now - the insights you receive will guide you to rebuild your financial support system in a sensible, down-to-earth way that will work for you.

A further message that comes through today is to consider your mindset and your approach to things. You could be thinking in terms of lack and scarcity rather than the possibility of having plenty of resources to support yourself. That mentality, while no doubt rooted in your present reality, is likely to lead to more of the same lack. Difficult as it may be, concentrate on reprogramming your thinking to seek the positive in your situation and to find ways to take constructive action. That will be your key to change.

Nine of Cups

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

The Nine of Cups also came up on December 5. The message on that day was that this card is “all about satisfaction and enjoying life. It encourages you to seek out whatever gives you pleasure, savoring each moment. Treat yourself! Don’t feel guilty - a little over-indulgence once in a while is okay. As the quote goes, ‘Everything in moderation, including moderation’.” In addition, this card signifies that a wish of yours might be granted. If this turns out to be the case, accept your good fortune humbly and remember to “pay it forward” to others. Keep the joyful energy flowing!

The Chariot

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

The Chariot also came up in the readings for January 18 and January 29, plus reversed on November 13 and November 20. Apparently it’s an important card for my readers! The Universe wants to get you moving! The card generally indicates firm control and rapid progress. Today the card suggests that you should take charge of something that is meaningful to you - maybe a project, an organization, a professional position - and use your vision and your strengths to drive it in a new direction. Don’t be afraid to speak up clearly and take the wheel. There are times when strong, authoritative action is necessary to get things moving, and this is one of those times. This - particularly your sudden assertiveness - may come as a surprise to others involved, but rest assured, you’re on the right track!

Five of Swords

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

The Five of Swords suggests that you’ve recently had a conflict with someone and you’re still dealing with the repercussions. You might have technically “won” the dispute but you’re now figuring out that there are considerable downsides to your “victory”. This card cautions against getting embroiled in controversies and engaging in showdowns. Sometimes it’s necessary to put up a fight, but in general, it’s best to pick your battles. Constant combativeness alienates everyone around you. But it’s not too late to transform the situation and salvage your relationships. Open up a line of communication and try to find common ground. Focus on what you agree on and how you can move forward in the future. Your change of approach will pay off for you in the long run.

Six of Wands

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

You’re about to achieve a triumphant success! You worked hard and patiently for it and now it will unfold. Celebrate it! Cherish it! Spread your good feeling around to your friends, family, and colleagues - they were instrumental in getting you to this place. Make sure to thank them for their love and support. Enjoy your moment in the sun and remember everything about it so you can remind yourself of it the next time the clouds start to roll in and you face adversity. This success may lead you to new ideas and inspire big changes - a different career or a move to another place - so be alert to all opportunities that arise. Good luck!

The Empress, reversed

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

The Empress comes up reversed today to remind you to take time for yourself and your needs. You may have been running yourself ragged lately trying to care for others and nurture their growth. But you may have neglected your own self-care during this period. “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!” For today, switch the focus to yourself - take a solitary walk, get your hair done, spend an hour or two with a good book and a cup of tea. You need to “refill the well” in order to keep taking care of others. This card is also associated with creativity and bringing new ideas and projects into the world. The reversal suggests that you could be encountering some kind of creative block. If so, you might be pushing yourself too hard to achieve your goals. Back off and allow yourself to have breathing room. This will enable you to see the project in a different light when you eventually return to it.

Eight of Cups

This card is from the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1910.

You may be in a situation which has been frustrating you for a long time and you’re tempted to walk away from it. If so, this card suggests that walking away would probably be the best course of action. There are many positive aspects to the situation in question, but the negatives are weighing too heavily on your shoulders and are holding you back. You’ve done your best to improve matters but some things are out of your control. It’s time to acknowledge your regrets, cut the emotional ties, and move on. There are greener pastures ahead of you once you emerge from this phase in your life. As the song goes, “You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away, know when to run.”

On Vacation!

The Card of the Day reading is going on hiatus for a little while. I’m going on vacation! I’ll restart doing the daily card posts and booking appointments for readings once I return on Monday, March 18.

Today's card for you, Wednesday, February 20

The Moon, reversed

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published in 2017.

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published in 2017.

The Moon card reversed following immediately in the footsteps of The High Priestess, yesterday’s card, as well as its repeated appearance upright on February 16 and January 25, carries a heavy message. While the previous cards encouraged you to expand your horizons and develop your spiritual and psychic powers, the sudden appearance of The Moon, reversed, serves as a warning. In this context, the reversal of this card suggests becoming lost in a swamp of illusion/delusion, even falling prey to anxiety, depression, or other mental illness. It could also be cautioning against being sucked into following a cult leader who is a con artist. The way to prevent this is to use psychic protection, also called “spiritual hygiene”, when doing your spiritual/psychic work. Some suggestions: Visualize impenetrable shields of protective white light energy around yourself. Soak in sea salt baths both prior to engaging in your work and afterward. Burn a purifying incense or herb and surround yourself with the cleansing smoke. (Make sure to crack a window open so the negativity can flee elsewhere.) Intent is key: When setting your protections, state that your intention is to protect yourself from any attacks from negative energies, chaotic vibrations, or harmful entities. When finished with your work, make sure to ground yourself with the Tree Meditation before going about your regular business. There are many books on the subject of psychic protection, but the best one is Spiritual Cleansing by the magical practitioner Draja Mickaharic. Remember that protecting yourself is your choice and you make it happen through exercising your will!

The High Priestess

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published 2017.

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published 2017.

The High Priestess comes up at this time to remind you to develop your intuition and your connection to Spirit. Like the Major Arcana card The Moon, which appeared in the daily readings on January 28 and February 16, this card suggests awareness beyond rational thought. The High Priestess also connotes the profoundly gentle energy of the Divine Feminine. There is a realm of wisdom and truth that can only be explored through spiritual means: prayer, meditation, shamanic journeying, or direct mystical communication. If you have already started on a spiritual path, the message today is to proceed wholeheartedly and expand your experiences, following them wherever they may take you. If you haven’t yet chosen a path, the message is to find one as soon as possible. It’s time! Ask the Universe to guide you to the best path through which you may connect with Spirit. Ask for Spirit to communicate with you in a way that you’re able to clearly understand and accept.

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8

Seven of Swords, reversed

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published in 2017.

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published in 2017.

This card came up on January 24. We’ve been encountering a run of repeat cards recently! Time to check ourselves and see if we’re listening to the cards’ messages! Here is the reading from January 24:

This is the third card in a row this week that has come up reversed. There seems to be a theme. Are you stuck in a rut, spinning your wheels? Are you feeling like you’re facing a brick wall whenever you try to get somewhere? This card suggests that it has to do with your approach to your problems. The Seven of Swords tends to appear when someone in your life is sneaking around behind your back, lying, stealing, being unfaithful. Could it be you doing these things to yourself? Perhaps you’re self-sabotaging by distracting yourself, procrastinating, and putting imaginary obstacles in your way. We humans can be very good at lying to ourselves. Take some time today to sit down and reflect on your recent choices and consider your motivation for them. You might see a pattern of self-destructiveness emerge. If so, call it what it is. Analyze and dismantle it so you can move forward.

Today’s reading carries the specific message that someone might be going behind your back to do something unpleasant. Be aware of this possible development and prepare to take action if necessary. Don’t be afraid to be confrontational. You are entitled to protect your boundaries and to expect honorable behavior from those with whom you associate.

We all have projects and ideas that never reached the full flowering of their potential, nor even managed to sprout as seedlings. If you’ve been struggling with this in your life, this card is coming up to encourage you not to give up! Try taking a new approach - perhaps your concept is a valid one but needs to be retooled and presented in a different fashion. Also, you might be subconsciously putting obstacles in your own way. What are your views on success? Do you truly believe that you deserve it? Can you visualize yourself experiencing the happiness and satisfaction of having completed a project that’s your very own? The card suggeststhat you might have a mental block of some kind. Think about this carefully and examine what in your mindset might be holding you back.

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published in 2017.

The Moon also came up in the daily reading for January 28. When we draw the same card within a few weeks, particularly when it’s a Major Arcana card, it indicates that its message is especially important at this time. Let’s revisit the reading for January 28:

You might find yourself in a situation today in which you’re dealing with a person who isn’t what he or she seems to be. Beware of the smiling, friendly mask. This card advises to rely on your intuition with this person, and not on your rational assessment (“But he seemed like such a nice guy!”). Tune into your gut instinct and listen closely to what it tells you. If you feel even a minor hesitation, cut ties with the person and stay far away! The Moon can also be a general suggestion to open your mind to the higher spiritual realms and develop your innate psychic abilities. Just be careful not to get roped in by any “plastic gurus”! You’ll be able to discern the real teachers through your intuitive reaction to them. And the more $$$ they charge, and the more they talk about themselves, the more fake they are.

In today’s reading, perhaps because we are approaching the Full Moon on February 19, the message that’s coming through emphasizes that you should hone your intuition and learn to unleash its full power. Here’s a good article on the topic:

This card is from the Borderless edition of the Rider-Waite deck (1909), published in 2017.

There are times when we are so disappointed and disgusted with a situation/relationship that we feel compelled to just walk away from it, regardless of the consequences. This card comes up today to suggest that if you find yourself in this position, avoid taking rash action. Think carefully before cutting ties and leaving. The eight golden cups sitting in a neat row indicate that there is still much good to be found in the situation. Try setting aside your negative emotional reactions for the moment, and instead, look at the details as dispassionately as you can. Weigh the good against the bad and consider sticking it out a little longer. If you wait, you’re likely to find a more advantageous time to break free.

You may have been sensing recently that your life is out of balance - you’re being pulled off-center by your impulsive choices. Or your mind is darting around out-of-control, dwelling on nagging thoughts that cause you great anxiety and depression. If that’s the case, now is the time to focus on your “inner work” and release yourself from the chains of negative thought/behavior patterns. Become conscious of when and how you’ve been allowing yourself to over-indulge in your bad habits. Catch yourself before making those choices. And when you notice your mind returning to a negative thought pattern, break out of it by refocusing on what you love and feel grateful for in your life. This takes a lot of practice but is well worth it. A daily practice of meditation would be helpful as well. Moderation in all things is key to your mental, emotional, and physical health at this time.

You may be going through a phase in which you have withdrawn from the outside world and become deeply self-absorbed - perhaps in work, study, or meditation. If so, be careful not to cut yourself off from human interaction. Balance is required here. Remember that we all need to take time for ourselves and for solitary contemplation, but we also need contact and sharing with others. We are social beasts. Alternatively, you could be feeling left out of the social picture. You might be seeing other people having fun together and you’re wondering why you’re not part of the group. If you want to join in, you have to put yourself out there and take the plunge! If that group turns out not to be the best fit for you, find another one that suits you better. It’s all up to you.

Your life now may be affected by an unhealthy addiction, obsessive emotional attachment, or a habit of lies and manipulation. This could be yours, or it could be that of someone close to you. If this resonates with you, take steps immediately to break the connection. What seems like a harmless indulgence will lead to great turmoil and sorrow in the future if the pattern isn’t broken. If someone else’s behavior is causing the problem, cut your ties with them. Doing so might be difficult, but it’s for your own safety. If it’s you who’s responsible, it’s time to do some serious introspection and work on eliminating your toxic behaviors. You’ve been carelessly drifting along, allowing negative, chaotic energies to dominate you and cause you to make poor choices. The good news is that you can turn this around by changing your attitude. Recognize that your own personal choices have a ripple effect that affects everyone around you. Choose to do the right thing.

Knight of Pentacles, reversed

This card is from the Morgan-Greer deck, published in 1979.

This card is from the Morgan-Greer deck, published in 1979.

This Knight is organized and methodical. Some might call him plodding, unimaginative, lacking in emotion, even boring. But he always comes through. He’s a “slow and steady wins the race” kind of guy. The reversal of this card indicates that you could use more of this energy in your life right now. You may be flitting around between different projects, trying to decide what your next step will be, and writing down lots of ideas and to-do lists that you put aside and eventually lose. You have the creative energy but not the grounding necessary to bring your projects to completion. You’re dreaming of the garden you want to grow, but haven’t yet picked up a shovel to start digging. This card comes up today to advise you that NOW is the time! Stop fooling around and get down to the real nitty-gritty. Make a coherent plan, break it down into small chunks, and follow it. Stone by stone, build a solid foundation for what you want to do. It’s tedious, dirty work, but without that clear structure to rely on, your dreams won’t come to fruition. The Knight of Pentacles is the least glamorous of the Knights, but he gets things done.
